Autonomous driving with Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Volker Wissing on Campus North
On March 1, 2024, the KIT Center for Mobility Systems and the Energy Lab at Campus North received an official visit from Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, and Members of the Bundestag Michael Theurer and Parsa Marvi. During this visit, the Applied Technical Cognitive Systems research group, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. J. Marius Zöllner, presented its pioneering research results in the field of automated and connected driving.
A highlight of this visit was the demonstration of autonomous driving functions, with the automated FZI shuttle ELLA transporting politicians and professors fully autonomously to the destination buildings on the campus grounds.
The development of the FZI shuttles ELLA and ANNA was carried out in close cooperation with the innovation partner FZI Research Center for Information Technology and has already covered a distance of 5,000 kilometers autonomously in real operation The demonstration once again underlines the high product maturity of the developed automated driving functions: No software adaptations were required to drive safely in the new environment.
